Windows Vista: Playing 3D Games in Windowed Mode

Recently I moved my PC into my den where it was the only electronic device, no TV, no home theater, no nothing! So I thought it would be cool if whilst I was grinding my life away in World of Warcraft I could do so in ‘Windowed Mode’ while watching a DVD in another window. This was a good idea but it was poorly executed. Apparently if you have AERO enabled in Windows Vista the mouse is configured to do some sort of ‘trickery’ to the background of Windows Vista.

Thankfully there is a setting you can set to disable this wacky ‘feature’.

If you right click on the executable file for the 3D game that you want to run in windowed mode (in my case WOW.EXE) there is an option called ‘Disable Desktop Composition’ if you select this option, AERO will be disabled while that application is running and allow you to play games in Windowed mode with a working mouse.

Hope this helps you catch up on Dexter while you do a little serial killing of your own!
